The Apprentice's Journey

OPENING PRAYER:

Spirit of the Living God, help me understand that faith is more than information, it's a way of life to be lived and shared. Show me how to walk this path in a way that invites others to follow Jesus alongside me.

READ: Deuteronomy 6:7 (NIV)

"Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." Deuteronomy 6:7 (NIV)

In ancient Hebrew culture, education wasn't primarily about classroom instruction, it was about apprenticeship. A young person learned a trade by working alongside a master craftsman, watching, imitating, asking questions, and gradually taking on more responsibility. Faith was passed on the same way, not through lectures, but through life shared together.

REFLECT:

Pastor Todd Carter made a critical observation about this passage: "Moses isn't describing a classroom. He's describing a life being lived out in the world on the road, in motion." This is fundamentally different from how we often approach spiritual formation in Western culture. We've created a system where faith is primarily about getting the right information into someone's head, memorizing verses, learning doctrine, passing tests. But the Hebrew model was about apprenticeship, about doing life together on mission.

Todd called this "an Eastern apprenticing style of education as opposed to a Western style of information dissemination." Think about what that means practically. In an apprenticeship, you don't just tell someone how to do something, you show them, then you do it together, then you watch them do it while you're nearby, and eventually they're ready to do it on their own and teach someone else. That's exactly what Moses is describing here. People and children sitting at home together, walking along the road together, lying down and getting up together, faith being caught as much as taught. The picture is of generations doing life together, on mission together. When you serve at a microcampus, a young person is with you. When you clean out someone's yard, they're beside you. When you pray for a neighbor, they hear you. When you give generously, they see it. When you worship, they watch your face. This is apprenticeship, faith lived out loud in the presence of the next generation. Whether you're a grandparent, mentor, coach, teacher, or family friend, you have the opportunity to invite young people into this kind of apprenticeship. They don't just need your knowledge; they need to see your faith in action.

APPLY:

Identify one area of your spiritual life that has been private or solitary, and find a way to include a young person in it this week. If you pray for missionaries, show them the prayer card and pray together. If you give to someone in need, let them help you deliver it. If you're reading a Christian book, share one insight over coffee or a meal. If you volunteer somewhere, bring them along. Let them see your faith in action, not just hear about it in theory. Make them an apprentice in following Jesus.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will invite a child to serve along with me this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, help me live my faith out loud. Give me the humility to let the children in my life see my real relationship with You, not a performance, but an authentic walk. Make me a faithful apprentice of Jesus so I can help others learn to follow Him too. Use my ordinary obedience to shape the next generation.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
