Don't Let Anyone Look Down on You

OPENING PRAYER:

Jesus, You welcomed children when others dismissed them, and You called young people to follow You without hesitation. Help every young person reading this to know they are seen, valued, and needed in Your mission right now.

READ: 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

Paul wrote these words to Timothy, a young pastor leading the church in Ephesus. Timothy faced criticism and dismissal because of his youth, but Paul's response wasn't to tell him to wait until he was older. Instead, Paul challenged Timothy to lead by example, to let his life speak louder than his age.

REFLECT:

Pastor Todd Carter spoke directly to young people in the congregation with words that carry both challenge and invitation: "I want to say to you young people, engage yourself in God's mission. Get out there and serve." He quoted this very passage from 1 Timothy, then added: "So volunteer in our children's ministry, volunteer in our guest ministry. Get out there and help with the micro campuses. You are young, you are passionate, you are gifted and God has good works planned out in advance for you to be able to do and he's going to use you powerfully."

There's something revolutionary in those words. Our culture, and sometimes even our churches, can treat young people as the church of tomorrow rather than the church of right now. We invest in youth programs and talk about "raising up the next generation," which is good, but sometimes we forget that young people aren't just the future, they're the present. God doesn't put your gifts and your passion on hold until you reach some arbitrary age of maturity. Todd's words ring with urgency: "Get in the game, get in the game because let me tell you, you are needed and God will do powerful things in and through your life." He shared the story of Megan Singer bringing her middle school daughter Tessa to serve at the Dove Estates micro campus. The residents loved her. She was helpful to the team. Powerful things happened in her life and in the lives of those she served. That's what it looks like when young people stop waiting for permission and start living on mission. You don't have to wait until you're older, more educated, or more qualified. God can use you right now, right where you are.

APPLY:

If you're a young person, identify one ministry area where you can serve this week. Don't wait for someone to ask you, volunteer. Reach out to a ministry leader and say, "I want to help." If you're an adult with influence in a young person's life, look for someone and specifically invite them to serve alongside you. Tell them why you think they'd be good at it. Give them real responsibility, not just busy work. Let them know they're needed, not just tolerated. Whether you're a grandparent, aunt, uncle, mentor, coach, or neighbor, you have the power to call out the gifts in a young person and invite them into meaningful service.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will invite a child to serve along with me this week.

CLOSING PRAYER:

God, thank You that You don't measure usefulness by age or experience. You look at the heart. Give every young person reading this the courage to step into what You're calling them to do. And give those of us who are older the wisdom to make space for them, to believe in them, and to serve alongside them as partners in Your mission.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
